Can Certain Psychological Or Physical Conditions Lead To Pain?

Somatization disorder develops in individuals suffering from emotional distress and can cause physical symptoms like headaches, chest and back pain, nausea, fatigue and dizziness. Psychosomatic disorder is another general term for a physical condition that is caused, or made worse by, mental factors. The team at Southwest Spine and Pain Center understands overcoming chronic pain requires more than just modern medicine—it requires a positive attitude too. Therefore, the pain management physicians are sharing what psychological and physical conditions can eventually lead to chronic pain symptoms.

Psychological Conditions

As we mentioned previously, certain psychological conditions like somatization and psychosomatic disorder can lead to chronic pain. A number of studies have been conducted on the connection between brain and body, and when it comes to pain, these studies have found the way you perceive pain affects the severity of symptoms. In general, emotional stress can exacerbate pain symptoms, and those with the above-mentioned disorders usually experience some of the following:

  • Abdominal, back, chest and joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision or vision changes
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Physical Conditions

Certain physical conditions can also lead to chronic pain. Some of the most common are degenerative diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis. As these conditions progress, so do their symptoms. Meaning, chronic pain can develop after some time if treatment isn’t being sought or if the person who has a family history of these conditions is not doing what they can to prevent them. Talk to our Southwest Spine and Pain Center physicians about preventative care and ways to manage the chronic pain you may be living with, now.
