Core Exercises to Manage Lower Back Pain

It is often recommended that people who suffer from back pain use exercise as a basic form of treatment. Aside from clean eating, the use of anti-inflammatory medications, and good posture, exercise can be one of the greatest resources for back pain relief. Exercise doesn’t mean joining a gym either. What is great about this treatment is that it can virtually be accomplished anywhere.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, we encourage patients to take treatment into their own hands. Stay motivated by making small changes to your home and work like to accommodate for your back pain treatment. Nearly 80 percent of all Americans will suffer from some degree on back pain during their lifetime, and exercise can be the key to managing existing pain and reducing your risk of future complications.

Core exercises help develop stability and strength in the torso, which some people lack who suffer from lower back pain. Core strengthening and simple exercises can improve fundamental posture issues that can be the source of pain. The muscles in the body’s core (i.e. the glutes) are a key element in the many motions we do every day- reaching over your desk, picking up your bag, etc.

The constant movement of the torso and hops from back to front can cause immense strain to the spine, this leading to lower back pain. Pain in the back can be relieved with simple exercises. For example, spinal stenosis pain can be relieved with a “knees-to-chest” exercise. By lying on your back and pulling your knees to your chest for 60 seconds widens the spaces between the discs of your spine. This stretch relieves pressure on the nerves and displaces weight evenly across your back.
