  1. Taking medication incorrectly. Don’t exceed the recommended dosage of your medicine. Taking more of a prescribed opioid medication can lead to serious addiction and potential overdose. Follow your physician’s instructions carefully and set up an appointment if your medicine is not providing adequate relief.
  2. Using the wrong medicine. Over-the-counter drugs have different uses and should be taken with caution. For instance, if you struggle with liver problems or drink more than three alcoholic beverages a nigh, do not use acetaminophen as it can cause liver damage. Anti-inflammatory pain relievers can cause high blood pressure and worsen kidney disease. Your pain specialist can review your medical history to direct you to the right pain reliever.
  3. Only relying on pain medicine. All too often, patients rely on pills to relieve their pain. There are many other beneficial pain treatments that can provide adequate relief other than medication.
