Treatment Options For Hip Pain

Hip pain could be caused by a number of conditions or occurrences, like degenerative joint diseases (osteoarthritis), trauma (injury) or old age. Nevertheless, hip pain can make even the simplest tasks feel tortuous. Rest assured, there are a number of treatment options available for those suffering with hip pain that do not require surgery.

The team at Southwest Spine and Pain Center provides highly effective, non-surgical solutions for hip pain and wants patients to be aware of these treatment methods should they find themselves with a similar condition. Below are treatments that range from least invasive to moderately invasive.

Physical Therapy Or Exercise

Physical therapy or some form of strength training can help increase muscle tone and the range of motion in your hips. A physical therapist or physician can evaluate your joint mobility and flexibility and then recommend an exercise or strength training regimen to reduce pain. This is a fairly non-invasive treatment option for reducing hip pain.

NSAID And Prescription Medications

Another non-invasive treatment option is over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.) and naproxen (Aleve). These medications work to inhibit chemical compounds that cause inflammation, which can reduce pain. Patients should consider taking NSAIDs if their pain is pretty mild.

A treatment option that can be a little more invasive, however, are prescription pain medications. Medications like Medrol (corticosteroid) can be taken orally and reduce severe hip pain, but do have relatively serious side effects. Weight gain, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar and the possibility of developing osteoporosis are possible side effects to medications like these, so consult your Southwest Spine and Pain Center physician before considering this course of treatment.

Ultrasound-Guided Joint Injection

The pain management and spine specialists at Southwest Spine and Pain Center may recommend an ultrasound-guided joint injection if you have moderate to severe hip pain. This non-operative procedure injects an inflammation-reducing steroid using ultrasound imagery to the area causing the most pain for maximum accuracy. The injection can be repeated if the patient requires additional pain relief. Talk to your Southwest Spine and Pain Center physician about an ultrasound-guided joint injection for your moderate to severe hip pain.
