What is Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve stretches from the lumbar spine (lower back), through the hips, and forks down each leg. Sciatica refers to the symptoms associated with radiating pain along the path of the sciatic nerve. Typically, when a person experiences sciatica, pain will circulate on one side of the body.

How Does Sciatica Develop?
Sciatica usually develops as a response to a herniated disc or bone spur that compresses on the sciatic nerve. When this occurs, several symptoms may develop including:

  • Pain radiating from the back, buttocks, hip, and/or leg
  • Inflammation
  • Numbness
  • Muscle weakness

Can I Prevent Sciatica?
Sciatica prevention is not always possible, but the following tips could help prevent future spine injuries and complications:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain proper posture when sitting and standing
  • Use good body mechanics when lifting, moving around, sleeping, etc.

What Treatments Can Help Relieve Sciatica Pain?
Common treatments for sciatica pain include:

  • Medications i.e. anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, anti-seizure, antidepressants
  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgery
