There are several treatment options for chronic shoulder pain, some of which include conservative therapies such as ice packs and over-the-counter painkillers, or interventional treatments like corticosteroid injections and stem cell therapy.
For mild to moderate cases of chronic shoulder pain, a Southwest Spine and Pain Center physician will most likely recommend rest, ice and heat packs to reduce inflammation, boost blood flow and promote healing. Severe cases may require some of the following treatments.
Steroid Injections Or Trigger Point Injections
A steroid or trigger point injection may be recommended for patients with pain caused by fibromyalgia or myofascial pain syndrome, a chronic disorder that creates trigger points (knots) in muscle. These injections contain a corticosteroid and local anesthetic so when they’re injected into areas causing pain, they not only reduce inflammation but they also provide immediate relief. These injections may be delivered into multiple areas during one session, which makes them extremely beneficial for patients with extensive damage or pain.
Platelet Rich Plasma Injections
Platelet-rich plasma injections are a highly advanced treatment option that use the patient’s own plasma to heal musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Physicians draw a small sample of blood from the patient and place it into a centrifuge to divide its contents. As soon as the platelets have been separated from the patient’s blood, they will be combined with the patient’s plasma and injected into the area causing pain. This treatment option is used to manage conditions such as muscle strains, sprains and tears; ACL and MCL injuries, rotator cuff tears, and damage caused by arthritis.
Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy has become increasingly popular in the repair and regeneration of damaged tissue from various chronic conditions. Bone marrow derived from the patient’s hip is harvested for stem cells and re-injected back into the body to relieve pain and decrease degeneration. This treatment is generally reserved for patients with a musculoskeletal chronic pain condition such as degenerative disc disease, tennis elbow, arthritis and some cases of fibromyalgia.
