Chronic Pain Relief With Nerve Blocks

Many chronic pain conditions are due to nerve damage, and a nerve block can effectively manage pain associated with nerve issues. At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, nerve blocks are a procedure that is performed in our outpatient surgery center, and patients are able to return home the same day.

Nerve blocks can be used both as a diagnostic method and as a treatment method. As a diagnostic method, the pain management doctors at Southwest Spine and Pain Center will use a nerve block to determine whether the patient receives sufficient pain relief. If it is determined that the nerve block was successful, a more permanent procedure like an ablation may be performed to provide long-term pain management. Nerve blocks can also be used diagnostically to accurately determine the source of pain.

Nerve blocks also can be used as the treatment option to relieve chronic pain. A nerve block will numb the nerves, which will interrupt the pain signals to the brain and effectively manage painful symptoms. Nerve blocks usually consist of a local anesthetic that will wear off after a short period of time, and a longer lasting medication that deadens the nerve and stops pain. Many patients experience relief from nerve blocks anywhere from six to twelve months. The procedure may be repeated to continue managing pain.

Nerve blocks are an outpatient procedure that can be performed in the Southwest Spine and Pain Center’s onsite state-of-the-art surgery center, and patients can return home the same day.
