Qutenza

Overview & Procedure

Qutenza is a topical patch system containing capsaicin 8% that is applied to the skin. It is indicated in adults for the treatment of neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia and for neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet.

Prior to a Qutenza treatment, it is best to have an area that will be treated washed, and cleaned. During the procedure, your provider will identify and mark the treatment area (painful or hypersensitive area) on the skin. The patch will be measured to fit the treatment area and applied for 30 minutes. Qutenza has been shown to relieve pain for up to 3 months in people with diabetic nerve pain or postherpetic neuralgia pain.

After Care

After being monitored in the recovery room, the patient will be given self-care instructions and sent home. The most common drug-related side effects of Qutenza are redness, pain, or itching where  Qutenza was applied. You should tell your doctor if any side effects bother you or do not resolve on their own.
