Battling Depression During The Holidays

The never-ending shopping list on top of the holiday chores is a lot to be responsible for during the holidays. As the days get shorter, our obligations become greater, almost always increasing stress and anxiety. When you add all the holiday stress with your chronic pain or spine condition, its never easy or fun.

Our Southwest Spine and Pain Center medical staff knows the holidays can be stressful and have created an environment of compassion and ease in all of our locations. We want each and every one of our patients to be prepared for every obstacle that comes their ways during their treatment. That is why we have provided a list of essential tips for fighting off holiday stress and depression.

Don’t hide your feelings. Know that it is okay to feel sad when something bad happens. Take your time in overcoming this sadness; cry if you have to and try to talk to someone who will listen. Don’t force yourself into joyful situations if you haven’t gotten over your grief.

Be realistic. The holidays are portrayed as perfect in the movies and marketing campaigns. In real life, it doesn’t always play out that way. Keeping family traditions is a good way to stay connected and get involved with genuine holiday activities.

Set aside your differences. If you have unresolved family issues and can’t ever seem to agree on anything, set aside your grievances. When an appropriate time arises, discuss your feelings with someone who can mediate. Be understanding.

Set a budget. Be mindful of what you can and cannot realistically spend during the holidays. Plan ahead of time what your purchases will be. This will help prevent last  minute over spending.

Say no sometimes. Holiday parties, family gatherings, and favors are bound to be scheduled this time of year. If you don’t have time to do something, don’t be afraid to say no. If you’re feeling down already, adding a list of responsibilities will only increase your stress levels.

Stay true to your health habits. Don’t let holiday temptations take over your health goals. Practice healthy eating and exercising throughout the holiday season. Tell your friends and family about your goals so they can support you along the way.

Even though people, decorative homes and meals, and wrapped presents surround you during the holidays, many people still feel alone. If you or someone you know is overwhelmed with stress and depression, consult with a professional. The specialists at Southwest Spine and Pain Center are more than happy to offer ways to cope with pain. Don’t let stress ruin your holiday season!
