Caring for Someone With Chronic Pain

Caregiving is not simply a role one takes on; it is a way of life. There are procedures, techniques, and tailored practices that caregivers carefully utilize while looking after a loved one. Taking care of someone with chronic pain can be difficult at times, and Southwest Spine and Pain Center hopes caregivers utilize our help when taking on these roles.

Southwest Spine and Pain Center has four locations across Utah, continuing to be the leading pain clinic in the southwest United States. Offering patients with better access to care, Southwest Spine and Pain encourages pain sufferers and caregivers alike to visit any of our Centers for individualized care.

Caregiving is a skill. We commend the millions of Americans that step up to these roles each year to take care of loved ones. In an effort to support caregivers and provide help whenever it is needed, Southwest Spine and Pain has prepared some essential tips caregivers should consider before beginning their journey.

Believe your loved ones. All too often, people in pain are put down and neglected. Outsiders cannot fully understand a person’s pain. Shunning your loved ones’ feelings will not improve their condition. Instead, listen and offer advice when you can.

Look for pain signs and signals. Keep a dictionary of the times when your loved one is in pain most, paying attention to every detail. This includes facial expressions, breathing, body movements, behavioral changes, and emotional changes. Report this journal to your loved one’s doctor for better advancements in treatment.

Offer your assistance. Use words of encouragement, join them at their doctors’ appointment, and take responsibility of their medications. There are certain things a person in pain can still do, so make sure you identify the lines of communication and where you help is needed.

Take help. Caregiving can be an emotional responsibility. If you are stressed or worked up, talk to someone or ask a doctor for advice.
