Foods to Avoid for Chronic Pain Sufferers

Sometimes, it feels like every movement we make enhances our chronic pain. Instead of staying active, we fall into a pattern of laziness and sluggishness. However, not being active can actually worsen our chronic pain.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, we confront chronic pain on a daily basis. From fibromyalgia, to pain from a sport’s injury, the medical team at Southwest treats each condition with professionalism and determination.

Patients of chronic pain syndrome can find relief outside of our office walls. One of the easiest ways is to alter eating habits. We encourage our patients to choose nutritionally rich foods that are high in anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants. While most patients find it easy to assimilate these foods into their diets, some find difficulties in deciding what to take out.

When some foods are digested, they send triggers out that release neurotransmitters, which heighten pain sensitivity. By following the basic rules of food avoidance for chronic pain, patients may find relief fast:

Limit sugar. High insulin levels promote pain. Cut out foods high in sugar and fruit juices. Instead, choose whole fresh fruit juice.

Include fresh foods and produce. Foods without preservatives are excellent. Try organic foods if possible. Organic foods are devoid of pesticides and other chemicals.

Cut out caffeine. Too much caffeine can lead to fatigue and inadequate sleep. Drink lots of water, instead, and stay hydrated throughout the day!

Avoid excess carbs. Fibromyalgia pain is increased with carbohydrates.

No nightshade veggies. Nightshade vegetables can trigger arthritis and other pain conditions. The substance called, alkaloids, found in these foods can disrupt nerve and digestive functions. Some examples are tomatoes, potatoes, hot peppers, and eggplant.

No junk food. As a general rule of thumb, steer clear of junk food and fast food. Additives can be extremely harmful to the health of our organs and increase chronic pain.
