Managing Chronic Pain Through the Summer Months

You may have heard that weather changes affect joint pain and it is true! Though hard evidence does not yet prove this theory, most physicians do agree that changes in barometric pressure cause joints to inflame and bones to rub against one another. The summer brings drastic weather changes from the wintery weather, with high temperatures making it more difficult for chronic pain sufferers to cope.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, we take all things into consideration when it comes to effects on chronic pain: weather changes included. With four locations across Utah, in Logan, St. George, Richfield, and Cedar City, Southwest Spine and Pain Center is the leading chronic pain management facility in the entire southwest United States.

Chronic pain syndrome affects over 100 million Americans, according to experts. When you take everything else a person encounters throughout their lives, chronic pain can be greatly exacerbated. Heat and humidity are common weather factors in the summer months, causing chronic pain sufferers to have a harder time regulating their immune system. Weather changes also cause level changes in the synovial fluid that lubricates the joints. If synovial fluid levels are low, inflammation and pain ensues.

Regardless if your pain is heightened or not in the summer months, chronic pain patients should consider these management tips to apply this season:

-       Stay indoors. On really hot days, find something to do inside. If you must be outside, take breaks frequently.

-       Adjust the air conditioning. Keep the air in your home cool and the humidity low.

-       Eat and drink adequately. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

-       Choose the right clothes. Wear light colors and natural fabrics that will not irritate your skin.

-       Try cooling products. Mint is a great alternative to treatment, as it cools the skin. Mint soap, lotion, and powder are great. Talk to you Southwest Spine and Pain Center physician before implementing any new products that may be unsafe to your treatment.
