Manual Therapy for Back Pain Relief

Manual therapy, often called manipulative therapy, is a form of physical therapy that is used to treat musculoskeletal conditions and associated pain. This practice, usually done by a physiotherapist or chiropractor, involves kneading, muscle manipulation, and joint mobilization.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, we are committed to precisely determining a diagnosis to begin treatment right away. Often times, our treatment design will involve a multidisciplinary approach, in which we will work with other specialists to better treat the condition.

Manual therapy is a specialized variation of physical therapy provided by a certified practitioner. Instead of using a machine, the practitioner uses their hands to put pressure on areas of the body that are affected by pain. Usually, the practitioner will identify pressure points and apply weight to areas of muscle tension, joint dysfunction, or muscle spasm.

Acute and chronic conditions can be managed through the use of manual therapy.  Usually, they are helpful in treating joints with inadequate range of motion. When pain ensues, the pain patient will feel discomfort, have loss of function, poor posture, and limited movement. When manual therapy is applied, mobility can be restored to stiff joints, and muscle tension may be reduced. It can be very effective for patients with back pain from joint problems, including sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

There is still limited data for the effectiveness of manual therapy. Many patients across the country will attest that manual therapy is effective, when coupled with physical therapy, for relieving back pain. Currently, manual therapy techniques involve two types of movement:

  • Soft tissue work- Massaging areas of soft tissue helps relax muscles, break up scar tissue, and increase circulation.
  • Mobilization- Using various speeds, forces, and distances, a therapist is able to twist, pull, and push bones/joints into certain positions. This technique can assist in loosening tissue and reducing pain.
