Pain Education For Elderly Persons

Many people believe that old age is the reason for pain for people over 65. This is partly true. As we get older, our body changes: our bones become a little weaker, our backs aren’t as sturdy as they once were, and our eyesight loses its strength. However, old age isn’t the only source of the problem. There is always a real condition behind these aches and pain.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, our medical staff strives to give proper diagnoses and pain education for the elderly patients who are looking for more reasoning than, “You’re getting older.” It is important that all of our patients recognize the relationship between aging and pain so they are equipped with knowledge during pain-related events.

Canadian researcher Allan Gordon, MD, revealed the results from a study examining pain education among elderly persons in January 2013. Dr. Gordon reported, “Given that pain is still undertreated and underreported, and rates of these are even higher among older people, our finding that simple educational initiatives can have significant effects on pain perceptions is important.”

Dr. Gordon and a team of expert researchers talked with men and women with a mean age of 66 years about topics of chronic pain: the fundamentals, pain epidemiology across our lifespan, the physical and psychosocial impacts, common comorbidities, polypharmaceutical treatment, and common barriers.

After these 90- minute sessions, the research team held question and answer forums. Close to 80 percent of the individuals reported having daily pain (60 percent categorizing it as severe) even while 85 percent were treating their pain with pharmacological and physical means.

After the study, the researchers wanted to know if increased education and knowledge lead to better pain management? Their findings were unclear, however, the number seemed remarkable to the individuals. The study showed that despite being treated for pain conditions, individuals are not getting the proper treatment due to their lack of improvement.

If a treatment or therapy shows little improvement for an elderly patient at Southwest Spine and Pain Center, physicians will consider alternative actions to better improve pain. The entire medical team works to promote wellness and education for every patient at our clinics. If you or a loved one is still suffering from pain despite being treated, consider a thorough examination from one of our physicians immediately.
