Athletes are at a higher risk of enduring pain and injury than inactive people. With summer quickly approaching, Southwest Spine and Pain Center is gearing up to efficiently care for chronic pain sufferers who need relief from a sports injury. Tennis is a great sport that can be played year-round, both indoors and outdoors. Tennis elbow is not so great on the other hand. However, did you know that most people who develop tennis elbow don’t actually play tennis? According to research, less than 5 percent of people who develop tennis elbow play tennis. This condition isn’t a direct result of the sport, but rather an overuse injury to the elbow, wrist, and hand.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, we are equipped with the best tools and techniques to help people manage their chronic pain. Sports activities are a great way for people to improve their physical fitness, but are also exercises that could end in injury. Though tennis can cause the development of tennis elbow, other activities such as lifting, twisting, and pulling may exacerbate the problem. Symptoms of tennis elbow usually appear gradually over time. Patients usually report symptoms of:

  • Radiating pain from the forearm and wrist
  • Difficulty completed tasks such as holding a cup of coffer
  • Increased pain in the wrist and hand
  • Elbow stiffness
  • Arm weakness

After a thorough examination, your Southwest Spine and Pain physician will design a treatment plan. Initial treatment may include the R.I.C.E (rest, ice, compression, elevation) method. After a 24-48 hour resting period, exercises may be recommended with a physical therapist. Manual therapy and muscle strength exercises can help improve joint function and muscle weakness. You should talk to your Southwest Spine and Pain physician about activity modification to best manage your pain and reduce the risk of further injury.
