Preventing Sports Injuries

Some people may not know this but the majority of sports injuries are a sign of nutrition imbalance. While some injuries are the result of accidents or overuse, many are from improper diet management.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, our physicians ensure all patients get the proper attention and education regarding their spine or pain condition. Athletes are recommended to stay hydrated and energized during any exercise regimen.

As an athlete, you can control the fate of your future. By embracing a more preventative approach, training smarter, and balancing a fitness regimen, injury prevention can be easier. All of these factors should always be combined with quality nutrition. Supporting our bodies with a strong foundation begins with whole foods and balanced meals.

Here are some simple tips to help reduce the risk of an injury and improve your healing process:

  1. Hydration. Drink water consistently throughout each day. Adequate hydration is critical to quality athletic performance. A tissue or joint that is dehydrated is more susceptible to tears.
  2. Vitamin C. Our bones are held together with collagen. Vitamin C is essential to keep our ligaments and tendons strong and flexible. Citrus fruits, dark leafy greens, broccoli, and strawberries are all rich in vitamin C.
  3. Bone health. Foods rich in calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D are key players in bone health. They prevent stress fractures and keep our bones sturdy and strong
  4. Healthy fats. One of our body’s primary defenses against inflammation are Omega-3s. They help keep our joints and tissue nourished. Omega-3 fatty acids also boost our immune system. Check out oily fish, seeds, and raw walnuts.
  5. Zinc. This important mineral help heal tissues and wounds. Red meat, lentils, turkey, and brown rice are great sources of zinc.

There is prevention found in food. All the protective helmets and kneepads cant prevent chronic knee pain, pulled muscles, or tweaked backs. By following these simple steps to a nutritious diet, athletes can work at preventing debilitating sports injuries.
