A 2014 study published in the Landscape and Urban Planning journal, assessed cortisol stress hormone levels in 25 adults in Scotland to see how their environment affected their emotions. The researchers found that the participants who lived in wooded, green areas had low cortisol levels and reported feeling less stressed that people living in urban settings.

Being a city slicker doesn’t necessarily mean you are doomed for a depressed life. Based on this research, we know that nature and outdoor settings can be a significant factor in reducing stress hormones, and increasing good feelings. Another study, conducted in 2010, found that spending just five minutes outside boosts mood and self-esteem.
