Spinal Tumors

A spinal is a malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous) mass of tissue that grows within or around the spinal cord. When a tumor originates in the spinal cord, it usually spreads resulting in a secondary tumor that can spread cancer to a different part of the spine. Typically, people who have a spinal tumor will feel intense back pain and some neurologic problems. Because the tumor manipulates the regular function of the spine, the nerves in the area become manipulated leading to pain and sometimes paralysis.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, we treat a number of pain conditions from common back pain to fibromyalgia, and everything in between. Sometimes, cancer pain is a product of the cancer itself but can also be from surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. The location and type of spinal tumor are factors to what symptoms may develop.  As the tumor grows, symptoms may worsen and cause greater damage to surrounding nerve roots, blood vessels, and bones. Some common symptoms include:

  • Back pain
  • Muscle weakness, especially in the arms and legs
  • Difficulty walking
  • Decreased bowel/bladder function
  • Paralysis
  • Reduced pain sensitivity

Whether the spinal tumor is cancerous or noncancerous, almost all patients will endure back pain. It is also common that pain will spread to the hips, legs, feet, and/or arms. The earlier your diagnosis, the better. Most back pain conditions will not be the result of a spinal tumor, but it is always safe to see a doctor immediately. If the pain is persistent and progressive, worsens at night, and you have a family history of pain, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Experts believe that genetics play the biggest role in the cause of spinal tumors, but environmental factors can play a role too. Exposure to certain chemicals or neurofibromatosis 2 can be the cause of a spinal tumor. Treatment is important for spinal tumors to avoid damage to other parts of the spine.
