Taking Multiple Medications - The Effect On Chronic Pain Treatment

When patients come to see a Southwest Spine and Pain specialist for the first time, we usually schedule an evaluation appointment to go over medical history and a physical evaluation. Prescribing pain medications is a common procedure at our four Utah practices, and ensuring patients are prescribed the proper meds with the proper instructions are always our main goals.

Southwest Spine and Pain Center is the best chronic pain management facility in the southwest. With four locations in Utah, in Richfield, Logan, St. George, and Cedar City, Southwest Spine and Pain Center is able to help more pain sufferers than ever. We often treat pain patients who suffer from more than one medical problem and take more than one type of medication. In these cases, we ensure all the right procedures are taken to align with patient safety.

Innovative technology has made it easier than ever to determine if mixing medications will have an adverse affect on a patient’s health. Computers are now designed to predict medication interactions that could occur in both long-term and short-term circumstances. Talking to a pain specialist about over-the-counter medications is important to patients’ health. Non-prescription medications can affect prescription treatment.

If you are taking medication for a different medical condition, be sure to have a discussion with your Southwest Spine and Pain Specialist and disclose:

-       Any allergies to medications

-       Over-the-counter medications that you are currently taking

-       If you are pregnant

-       If you have ever had problems taking medications in the past

Also, consider these guidelines when taking multiple medications:

  1. Keep a list of all your medications, diagnoses, and dosages.
  2. Keep a list of your allergies in case you need to give the information to any new healthcare provider.
  3. Only take your medication as provided by your doctor—do not double the dose or stop taking it!
  4. If you miss a dose, don’t panic. Take your medication as soon as you remember. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if it is longer than 24 hours after your directed time.
  5. Do not use outdated medication.
  6. Store your medications in a dry area, free of moisture and away from children.
  7. If you experience unusual side effects after using a medication, contact your doctor immediately.
  8. Do not allow anyone else to use your medication.
