Treating Sciatica and Chronic Pain Symptoms

Sciatica, pain along the sciatic nerve, can be extremely draining. Patients usually feel weakness and numbness in the leg after an injury or forceful pressure on the sciatic nerve. Chronic pain is no stranger to this condition either. If a person leaves their sciatica untreated, they can expect a slue of painful symptoms. At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, physicians accurately and efficiently diagnose and treat patients who suffer with sciatica. Sciatica pain can be overwhelming at times, and our clinic is here to offer some advice for treating your symptoms at home.

The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and extends down the back of each leg to the ankle. Typically, sciatica will only affect one side of the body, but there are cases where it demonstrated symptoms on both sides. For many, there is an irritation or pressure on the nerve that can be treated under non-surgical means and will get better over time.

A physician is likely to take a conservative route when treating sciatica. They are likely to recommend that their patients take anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen. It is also highly recommended to keep moving, and not to stay in bed all day long. One of the best at home remedies a patient of sciatica can do is exercise.

Maintaining good, strong posture, doing low impact yoga and leg/back exercises, and practicing healthy eating will all improve your body’s ability to heal. Citrus fruit drinks that are high in vitamin C help boost the immune system and prevents illnesses. A healthy diet also helps reduce swelling around the sciatic nerve.

The McKenzie Method for sciatica pain relief is an impressively affective exercise that is safe and used for herniated discs and sciatica. Robin McKenzie, a physiotherapist from New Zealand, introduced this method in the 1950s to resolve spine issues. The basic rundown of the exercise involves the patient to lie on their stomach with their chest propped on their elbows. The lumbar spine comes into an extended position thereby relieving sciatica pain. Doing this exercise for only a minute at a time, a couple of times a day will reduce inflammation and compression on the sciatic nerve.
