About Southwest Spine and Pain Center

The double-board certified physicians at Southwest Spine and Pain Center opened their first practice in St. George, Utah in 2011. Since then, the three founding partners, Dr. Rick Obray, Dr. Jon Obray and Dr. Derek Frieden, have opened four other pain management clinics in cities throughout the state, including Cedar City, Richfield, Logan and Hurricane.

Having either grown up in Utah or lived there for a number of years, each physician at Southwest Spine and Pain Center understands the importance of bringing world-class pain care to small towns and rural areas. Southwest Spine and Pain Center’s five locations eliminate a patient’s need to travel long distances for significant pain relief and highly advanced treatment.

Derek Frieden, M.D. completed his fellowship training in interventional pain management at Harvard Medical Center and specializes in the use of the latest medical technologies to address chronic pain and improve the lives of his patients.

Jon Obray, M.D. was educated at the top medical schools in the country, including the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Obray's clinical interests include minimally-invasive pain procedures. 

Rick Obray, M.D. was trained at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic, and is one of the few physicians in the country to have completed fellowship training in both pain medicine and diagnositic imaging. With this multidisciplinary training, Dr. Obray is able to provide the highest level of expertise in minimally invasive image guided procedures. 

Brian Richardson, M.D. entered active duty military service after completion of medical school. He was deployed to Baghdad during his time of service before returning to the States to complete residency and fellowship training at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Richardson uses his extensive experience to determine the therapies that may best benefit his patients. 

Alan Hillstead M.D. completed residency and fellowship training at the Henry Ford Hospital and has experience in family medicine, anesthesiology, and interventional pain management. Dr. Hillstead works to help his patients get back to the life they want to be living.
