Worse Pain in Colder Weather

For those of us living with a chronic pain condition, predicting weather changes can be felt where pain is persistent. Sinus pain, arthritis pain, and even fibromyalgia symptoms can be greatly intensified once the weather changes; ie raining, lowering temperatures.

You may have heard about this relationship, but never understood why or how pain and weather are related. Researchers suppose that temperature and barometric pressure changes are the cause of increased pain.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, we believe in offering treatment that will be affective in all stages of our lives, including drastic weather changes. Whether you have pain from a recent injury, or a chronic pain condition, our specialists consider all factors when designing a treatment plan.

When the weather pressure changes outside, our bodies make adjustments so that everything keeps working at optimal performance. Our joint spaces and sinus cavities may close off when we are congested, but can change when the barometric pressure changes. However, when outside pressure changes quickly, our body doesn’t have enough time to adjust and we subsequently feel intense pain.

The interior spaces in our body, such as joint spaces, become exposed to strong pressure forces and feel great pains in the surrounding tissues and body membranes. As the body eventually adjusts to the weather differentiate, pain will subside.

New research suggests that being exposed to cold temperatures with wet hair can cause sinus pain and pain behind the eye. The study found that the brain and head must have a constant temperature. When our hair is wet and we enter cold weather, an immediate reduction in scalp temperature causes immediate sinus changes to protect brain tissue. The sinus cavities become inflamed in an effort to generate warmth.

Some individuals say that warm weather keeps pain symptoms at bay. If you or someone you know has intensified pain symptoms in colder weather, consider layering your clothes, and drying your hair before being exposed to cooler temperatures.
