Yoga is unlike any physical therapy regimen. The goal is not to build muscle or body strength. Rather, yoga focuses on mind-body exercises that involve relaxation, held physical postures, and controlled breathing techniques to assist in chronic pain relief. Chronic pain is a condition that affects the body and the mind, and yoga encompasses practices to relieve pain and stress to both the physical and emotional well being of the patient.

Many studies have researched the levels of cytokines in the body when a person does yoga. According to a physical therapist from Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maureen McBeth, reduction in cytokine levels have actually been known to decrease after a person has done yoga exercises. Cytokines are proteins in the body that signal an immune system reaction and stimulate inflammation in the body.

Yoga is a fun, feasible, and motivating technique used in chronic pain treatment. You can recruit friends and family members to join in on classes with you. If you wish to integrate yoga exercises into your treatment plan, talk to your Southwest Spine and Pain physician to review your condition and to see if yoga is a safe treatment for you.
