Fibromyalgia and Dieting

The age-old question: what is fibromyalgia and how can I control it? Patients living with this painful condition are often left wondering why and how. Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal condition that is greatly misunderstood. Symptoms of the condition include muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and anxiety. Because the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, patients often turn to treatment for pain management.

At Southwest Spine and Pain Center, our trained medical staff is determined to provide the best assistance for fibromyalgia patients. It is important to keep all patients informed about remedies that can be done at home in an effort to speed up their recovery and reduce their pain.

Fibromyalgia syndrome is worse when a number of symptoms are present. When the symptoms exist all together, depression and social isolation can endure. Southwest Spine and Pain experts encourage fibro patients to seek help immediately to avoid further medical conditions.

Women are actually 10 times more likely to have fibromyalgia than men. Exercise and drug therapy are common treatments for fibromyalgia, but not the only treatments. A tailored diet may reduce painful symptoms. Here are some ways in which patients with fibromyalgia syndrome can alter their diet to reduce pain:

  1. Avoid caffeine. Drinking less caffeine and more water can eliminate or reduce chronic pain and fatigue.
  2. Introduce more vitamin D. A lack of this vitamin can promote intense pain, whether or not a person has fibromyalgia or not. A deficiency of vitamin D may worsen bone and tissue health. Check out over the counter supplements to ensure your body is getting adequate vitamins each day. Include dairy products and fatty fish (ie salmon, halibut) into your diet
  3. Avoid packaged/processed foods. A general rule of thumb: eliminate fast food altogether! Additives can be dangerous to our body’s health and may trigger painful symptoms.

Fibromyalgia can be managed. With the help of a doctor and the motivation to get healthy, fibromyalgia symptoms may be reduced or eliminated faster than you ever thought.
